Hi, I am stuck between AP1, or AP2 or mixed set, I am a 12 handicap, but I have a solid swing that looks like it belongs more to a 5 handicap, I am a good ballstriker most of the time and my current flight is a medium draw, I rarely take a divot because I sweep the ball, I also hit the ball far for both my age and handicap Although I like the AP2's a lot, I am 15yrs old and have to pay for my own Irons so the AP1's being cheaper might be a better deal. My MAIN QUESTION IS, are the AP1's workable enough and small enough for someone who likes to play different shots? The last thing I want is club-heads that are too clunky and oversized and say bad ballstriker from a mile away!

Thanks for the help, B. Steele (Hazeltine National Golf Club)

Virtually every club is workable--you just have to find out how. But AP2 is more of a player's club.

Shovels aren't considered "bad player's" club. K.J. used to use Game improvement clubs and many others do the same. just find what fits your game.

I use TM CB irons and they're shovels. I'm also 0.1 handicap so it's a matter of preference.

I would get the AP2s.  When getting a new set of clubs you want to buy a set that you can use for many years to come.  When you improve a bit more you will be wishing you got the AP2s.  AP2s are much more workable.  The most important thing is to get fit by a store like golf galaxy so you have the proper specifications.  I also am 15 and I have a 10 handicap and I just got a set of AP2s and SM4 wedges at golf galaxy.  Go with the AP2s the money will pay off in the future.

Also if your swing is truly that of a 5 handicap I would take a look at CBs or possibly even MBs.  Once you reach a swing of 5 handicap or below it is basically up to personal preference.

Get fitted.  I had a set of DCI's forever and got fitted at a Titleist fitting day and tried all of them.  The rep finally landed on AP1's and I've been loving them.  I also needed 1" long (which I had before) and stiff shafts.

If you're spending the money... get fitted first.

I did fittings for Titleist last year  and do it the right way and find a course that is doing a Titleist fitting day this year and do it with the launch monitor OUTSIDE!  Find the Titleist rep in the your area and ask where a fitting day is going to be in the next couple of months. I believe that you will find the AP2 set to be the club that is both workable and great feeling. I have had all three versions and the 712's are the best yet!!
