Only God and Jack Nickolas can hit a 1 iron. His 1 iron was probably less loft than a 2 iron today. For the majority of golfers that never get past 90 mph or break 90 on the course - the answer to this question is the 5W. There is another thread about why Titleist only offers 1 - 2 Iron (CB?). Even the pros are looking at their 3 irons carefully and very few ask for a 2 iron. If you love your 3 iron and relish another iron.... A driver, 13.5 FW, putter, and 2-9 only leaves you with 3 wedges, including PW. Dave Pelz recommends 4 wedges for scoring. 4I, hybrid, fairway, and driver is more common than adding a 2 iron, even if you can enjoy hitting it. Not as useful in scoring.

Back in the 1980s I was actually able to hit a standard 1 iron and could hit it 260. Even nowadays, I can't hit a 14-15* hybrid (I tried a Hogan 0 hybrid about 3 months ago and it didn't even come close to the distance I got with a 7 wood). I carry a lofted driver and there is no benefit of a 15* 3 wood since I hit an 18* 5 wood just as far. Between my 5-18 wood and 4-21 hybrid, I navigate the golf course pretty well. I also have a pretty solid middle game with the 5/26 and 7/34H. No matter what, I can always count on sticking greens with the 8-PW and getting down in 2 with the Vokeys. Back in the old days, I carried 3 and 4 persimmon woods, 1-9 irons, PW SW putter. I used to use a 4 iron off the fairway for the most part (unless the ball was sitting really pretty) but was capable of 200 yards with it. I actually hit a 3 wood much farther than a driver and hit it 260 but hit 325 one time and 290 another.

  4. im actually the same i can hit my 3 wood about 250 and my driver 240

5 wood all the way.  I played with a 7 wood for quite a long time (2006-recently) mainly because I couldn't find a 3 or 4H that I could hit satisfactorily.   I have 5-18 wood and 4-21 hybrid and I do pretty well with them.

My dad told me in 2007 that pros recommended a setup of driver-4W-7W, 4H, 5-PW irons, GW-SW-LW and putter for quite a few.

This is probably swing related, but there's only a 10 yard gap between my driver and 3 wood off the tee, but off the fairway I'm probably 10-15 yards shorter with that club.

My 5 wood is good for about 240 off the fairway if hit right.
