I'm getting ready to purchase a new set of irons as I have outgrown my G5's and have become a much more consistent ball striker.  I'm debating on getting 712 AP2's in 5-9 (Maybe P?) or blending it with 5-6 AP2,  7-8 CB, and 9-P MB.  I have started playing MP 33 muscle backs in 8,9,P in substitute for my current set and have much enjoyed the tighter dispersion and shot making from the scoring zone.  I am also debating on whether do get the iron set pitching wedge or to go with a vokey 46 or most likely 47 to match the lofts of the iron set.  I like the look and feel of the vokey, but my only objection is that I mostly use my pitching wedge for full swings more than I use it around the green.  I tend to hit my MP33 pitching wedge much more pure than my gap, sand, or lob on full swings.  Any suggestions would be appreciated on whether to get all AP2's or to blend the set, and whether or not to get the set pitching wedge or the vokey 47.

    Cheers from Tahoe

This is just my personal taste, but I like the pitching wedge being part of the set.  I know it, the yardage, and the feel so why change?  When I will order my clubs I'll have 3-P in the MB's and 52.08, 56.08, and 60.04.  The thing though is the bounce/grind on the 52 and 56 is a full sole grind which works great on full swings too, I love my 52.08 for this reason.

So you could go with a 46.08, 48.06 full grind sole and be able to go full swing like your P if you like the look and feel of the vokey's over that of the MB's or CB's.

As far as blending what your saying makes sense, my question is does the change in feel between 3-4 different types of clubs become problematic.  I was considering blending CB's and MB's.  But after hitting the MB's I decided the feel was most important and I want to stay consistent in my ball striking, especially since the results in ball flight were similar.  For me knowing when I look down at a club, and it feels right leads to consistent play.  So I like my 3-P to be of one model.  But I came to this conclusion after hitting all of the models.

Completely agree with Erik.  I bought the 712 cb mb split, split at the 6.  After playing them for 10 rounds I found it distracting with the blend.  Also inconsistent as I "dug" at but more with the 3-6 opposed to "pick" with the 7-p.  Titleist rep swapped them out for me and now I have a full mob set....Right way to go.

I've preferred set wedge vs Vokey 48 mainly because I use the PW for full swings or long pitches.  I tried this with DCI 981 and preferred the set wedge.   Not a particular fan of the Vokey 48 because of its shaft length and the loss of yardage vs the set wedge.

I prefer the 50-08 vs the 48-06.   My current gap wedge is bent 1* strong (to 49-07) and has been shortened to 35.25" with lie angle to match 54-14.  The 50 is my primary pitching weapon and I use it a lot for bump n run shots around the green.

go with all AP2's I would suggest.  I just got the 712 AP2's and they are superb.  They are forgiving on mishits but when hit correctly feel like a blade.  They offer almost the exact same shot shaping as MB's as my friend has MB's but we both in a scramble were able to hit the same 50 yard slice with a 7 iron.  I am a good ball striker and on correct hits off both the other day I could barely feel a difference.  I personally don't like mixed sets but that is my opinion because of how the clubs feel different and look different.  Also sometimes people swing differently knowing how each club performs.  I got 3-PW because I also take full swings mostly with the pitching wedge- pitching wedge I treat more like an iron than a wedge.  It is also easy to take some off of and I like the yardage gaps it gives me between my 52 degree and 9 iron.  It spins a sufficient amount so it is not necessary to get a vokey for the spin factor.

    Hey All,

Cheers again and thanks for the replies.  I decided to go with AP2's in 5-7 and MB's in 8-P with kbs c taper stiff shafts, 6i at 61* lie angle standard length and golf pride tour wrap 2g grips in white.  Pretty excited.

I went with the blend set and the set P wedge based on the following reasons.

I thought about doing all ap2's, but in the end I decided I wanted to most forgiving blade like iron in my long irons (5-7) and the best performing irons in my more lofted irons (8-P).  I'm also gaming a Cameron Big Sur S Long 47" and a midsize staff with my name, company logo, and the TPI swingman logo as well.  A great marketing tool for potential clients and am looking forward to branding some of the athletes that I currently work with.

The next step in being an ambassador for Titleist will be to round out the bag with 910 metalwoods (d,f,h).  Might wait for 913, but then again I might just get the 910s for now and get the 913's down the road.  We'll see what happens.  Thanks again TT, and I still welcome any further comments and discussion to this thread.
