  1. I am considering the 915 D2 driver, and I wonder if the standard length 45" club can be ordered with a 43.5" shaft instead.

If so, I assume that the swing weight is adjusted by Titleist to compensate for the shorter shaft.

Or, would I simply be better off choking down on the grip 1.5"?  Does choking down adversely affect the swing weight?

    Thanks.

In your fitting, it was determined that you needed a 43.5 in shaft on your driver?  That length is 1/2 in over a 13.5 or 15 fairway.  I think this is something Bubba needs to advise you on.  I choke up about a half inch sometimes when I have a tight fairway.  Ask you fitter, but I think that they can make the length of  your shaft any length you want at the factory.

Chuck, don't overlook the fact that many pros use a driver with a shaft length less than 45".  Bubba Watson uses a 44.5" shaft and Tiger has used a 43.5" shaft most of his career.

My pro didn't tell me that I 'needed' a 43.5" shaft, but using an impact label, it is obvious that I get more on-center hits with a shorter shaft.  It may result in a small loss of distance, but I hit more fairways.

Hello Rich,  We can build the club at 43.5", but it is going to depend on what shaft and what grip to give you the swingweight tolerance.  We cannot get to a D3-D4 swingweight at 1.5" short and a standard grip.

  5. Currently, on my 910 D2 driver, I have the Bassara W 50 shaft and the Tour Velvet grip.

On the 915 D2 driver, I assume that the equivalent shaft would be the Mitsubishi Diamana M+ Red 50.

To reach the proper swing weight with a 43.5" shaft, would I need an ultra light grip?

    Thanks.

Yes Rich, the Diamana M+50 is very similar to the Bassara you currently have. At 43.5" the heaviest swing weight would be around C5. The lightest grip we have is the Winn Dri-Tac Wrap Lite, and you can add about 6 swing weight points if you use that grip.

    Thanks

  7. Thanks for all of the good info.  Lots to think about here.

For what it's worth, I ordered my D2 with a 46" Aldila Rogue Silver stiff shaft. My 913 D2 also had a 46" Bassara 50 stiff shaft. If you hit the ball straight with decent swing speed, you might try the longer shaft for some increased distance. If you hit it straight.

And, therein lies the problem.  I have directional issues with a longer shaft.  I dumped my Taylor Made driver for Titleist a few years back  The TM shaft was even longer than Titleist.  I love distance, but in my view, direction trumps distance.

My driver is 45" and as stated, I just grip up on tight fairways when I need a little extra accuracy or sometimes I will even go with the old 15" fairway.  But, back to you question, I'm sure you can order it from the factory if you feel that is what you need.  I too, will take accuracy over distance any day.  Give me 250-260 down the middle all day.  With my new 915D2, accuracy seems to have gone to another level.  Cheers.

Titleist's heaviest weight for the head will only keep the swingweight at stock with a maximum 3/4 to 1 inch length reduction. I played a modern Titleist driver at 43.5" for almost a full season. Results were OK but seeing higher handicappers handle drivers at 45-46 inches, I put the driver back to 44.5" and have kept that ever since. No loss of solid hits and a definite gain in speed. If you do go with 43.5", there are a couple options to increase the swingweight if you like that feel. The most basic is lead tape. The 2nd is to have the head hot melted to add some weight properly to the interior. This is a common solution on tour but you'll need to have someone experienced for the process. I'm sure you can find a number of places that do it via an online search. Best of luck.
