    Dear TT Family,

I love the Titleist brand and I am looking to add more of my favorite brand to my bag. I have recently purchased a new titleist bag and 913h hybrid. I have played with my TommyArmour 845 irons for over 15 years. My next purchase will be a set of irons. I am a 10 handicap and I am seeking advise on which irons would best fit me...AP1 or AP2 or a combination set of cb and mb irons???

    Thanks,

    Riley

  2. I'm a 9 handicap and love my 712 ap2's! I consider myself a decent ball striker, but when I tested the cb's, I just wasn't able to pure the long irons (4&5 mostly, 6 was borderline) for me to purchase a full set of them. The ap2's were so easy to hit and I just felt like I could really go after every shot with them. I went with the full set of ap2's vs a split set of ap2/cb for the confidence factor and I haven't regretted it at all. As always, go test them all and get fitted for the ones that suit your game the best.

The best and only advise I would give you Riley, is to go see a certified fitter. I play AP2s and love them, but am not qualified to advise you on which clubs to purchase. You will not regret this decision and they will be fitted to meet you particular needs. Never purchase clubs without being fitted or you will be wasting you money. With respect. Chuck

As many have said it is always best to go get fit to see what iron/shaft combination give you the best results. As far as your question specifically I think it will depend on feel and results. You won't go wrong with any selection, although I would probably rule out AP1s if you are a 10 and have been playing 845s, I would definitely check out the AP2s however, great look and feel and good forgiveness while allowing playability with shot shape.

    AP2's!!

Also get fitted and get them dialed in correctly with the right shaft...and get them adjusted.  It will add tons of confidence when playing new irons.

As others have said go get fitted…. you should hit all the clubs and go with what feels best. you may end up with a combo set of AP2/CB, AP2/MB, or CB/MB, I personally don't like the look of the AP1's, ( looks too bulky) Good luck and welcome to Titleist!

    Hi Riley,

I'm a 9, and love my 912 AP2's....I toyed with a mixed CB/MB set when I was shopping a few years back, but after trying the AP2's, I didn't give that another thought...in fact one of our Saturday morning group hit a few balls with my AP2's right after I got them, and showed up the next week with his own...!!

Try them first, and I'm sure you'll see what we mean....

I have the 714 AP2s which I love but forged clubs are not for everyone. The AP1s are a very forgiving club and might be for a person with a higher handicap, of course that all depends on what the fitter determines from the numbers. Just remember the new 716s should be coming out sometime late this year. Titleist is on a two year cycle for its clubs. The irons are the 7s and the drivers/fairways/hybrids are the 9 series and they rotate years (i.e., 712 irons, 913 woods, 714 irons, 915 woods), Good luck in finding the right clubs for your game.

    Hey Riley,

Nothing better than a new set of sticks!  I am a 1 handicap and have played the 710, 712 and 714 AP2's and have nothing but great feedback.  They are a great club for 1 handicap, or a 10 handicap.  I recently made the move to a set of 714 MB's for no other reason than i missed the look of a blade.  I always recommend the AP2 to low handicaps and high handicaps, my one reccomendation to you would to get fitted for the right shaft, makes all the difference in the world with all the new technology they have now.  Good luck and hit 'em straight!

    Riley,

I play 714 AP2s.  I love the look and more importantly the feel of my irons.  However, in the famous words of the Godfather of Team Titleist, Chuck Z, "Go get fitted by a Titleist Advance Certified Fitter".  Getting fitted will help you optimize your selection and maximize your long term investment.  In the end, let the numbers and the way you like to see the flight of your ball determine your choice of shafts and ultimately irons.  Take your time and enjoy the journey.  Let us know what irons and shafts you choose.

    Keep it in the fairways....

I played in college and got the 710 AP2's. They are the best irons I have ever hit!

    Hi Riley,

I guess I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum.  I play to 3 handicap and play the 714 AP 1.  Also played the 712 series.  I switched from miz MP 52.  I love the forgiveness and the look was very easy to get used to once I played them a few times.  When not swinging my best the AP1 will help more than a slightly missed AP2.  I was fit by the Titleist Tour Truck while on its way to a tour event.  I think you should do yourself a favor and at least look at the AP1.  Either way, the AP series  of irons are beautiful to look at as well as play.  Good luck in your search.

    Hi William B.

Good right up on the AP1's do you really see that much forgiveness in the AP1's. I am about 7-8 handicap and just need to break that barrier to get into the lower 70s. I currently play the 712 MB and they are great clubs don’t get me wrong but if you don’t hit them pure there is no forgiveness. I usually hit them solid with the swing plane i have but there is that long iron that may not always go right. I also see that the 716 Irons will be out this year hopefully, i was interested in your thread as you talked about the Ap1s and mostly everyone proclaims the AP2s as where its at. So i will defiantly like to get fitted for either or when they come out, thanks for the post and write up.

    Hi Jeff,

I originally had the AP 2 in my head, but once the fitter showed me the numbers I was sold.   My smash factor jumped up, launch was great and distance was better also.  The forgiveness is just the added bonus of the AP1.  I have a fairly quick tempo swing, short backswing with a aggressive move into the ball, fitters words not mine.  I would describe myself as a hitter not a swinger. aka JBH.  Therefore, I play a heavier tip stiff shaft, rather than the stock offering.   I love being able to go out and not be swinging great and still post a sub 80 round.  The AP1 still has a narrow sole, a fairly thin top line, so are not too clunky looking, imho.   I also enjoy the look of the guys faces once they play with me and realize that I'm  playing AP1, usually first question is why not the AP2 or some other blade like club.  My response is always, " I'm  not on the PGA tour, but I still want to shoot low numbers so why not have the forgiveness of the  AP1".  Give them a try, I think more people should probably be playing AP1s, but there egos won't let them.  Those are the ones I like to beat the most.  Good luck,. Try to get fit by the TItleist tour truck.
