  1. I have been using miz mp32s for years. Finally showing their age. Going to buy 716 MBs.

MP32s are perfect so want to make sure I get transition right. As they are 1/4" shorter and 1.5 deg flatter than the MBs what spec should I order ?

    PBlack,

I have used miz's length and lie setup (e.g. your MP32s) in my irons for many years. I stand 6'0" and do not have disproportionately long or short arms for my size. I assume you must be somewhere in the area of 5'9" to 6'2" with similar proportions if the miz standard specs fit you well in your golf stance. I have tested and compared Titleist's 714MB irons, against my setup and in my tests, the Titleist 714MBs compared very favorably producing similar trajectories and dispersion. I will say that because of the 1/4" added length and the more upright lie angle in the Titleist, I generally found myself conscious of trying to stand a little taller than I usually would with my own irons (miz length & lie). This was actually helpful to me in averting my typical miss (left). The more upright lie of the Titleist combined with the longer length should have biased my misses even more to the left, all other things being equal. What the experience taught me is that I'm not too sensitive to the length and lie changes involved here.

Please note also that the lie angle of your MP32s is (probably) not uniformly 1.5 degrees flatter club-for-club than each corresponding Titleist iron. Even with ideal (zero tolerance) literature specs, some miz irons will be separated from Titleist by only 0.5-1.0 degrees. And of course, when actually measured, the lies might actually be less than, equal to, or farther apart than 1.5 degrees. Perhaps you have had your lie angles checked and measured, but many golfers to not, and your question sounded like you were quoting catalog specs.

A solution that would obviate need for stance adjustments like I made would be to order the 716MBs your considering cut and bent to your exact [measured] MP32 specs. Letting Titleist do this during your set build might save on grip replacement costs that could attend adjustments made later, and you would have a high degree of confidence that your new irons would match your old ones spec for spec, club to club.

One additional consequence of your contemplated length change is a (very) slight reduction of the club's swingweight due to the 1/4" lost. This reduction, however, would not likely be noticeable with a 1/4" length change because other factors such as +/- tolerances of shaft weight, grip weight, head weight and club assembly would offset the 1-2g involved in the shaft length difference between your MP32 and the 716MBs. I do not know what Titleist's tolerances are for overall club weight, and club balance after assembly but I'd be very surprised if it was less than 2g over the length of the club. (2 grams incidentally, is approximately the weight of a dime. If you would like to test your sensitivity to such an infinitesimal change, scotch tape a dime to one of your MP32 clubheads and see if you notice the weight difference.)

I hope this information is helpful to you. Good luck with the 716 MBs. Beautiful looking clubs!

  3. Thanks for your most detailed help and reply.

I'm going to go ahead and order them 1 deg flatter and 1/4" shorter. Hopefully will be close enough. My body can adjust for the rest.

When I stand on matt with both irons at address the MB is clearly more upright than the Miz.

Wow! All that confused me. Bottom line is if you go to a certified fitter not just a retal store you won't be disappointed switching to Titleist. You might find you perfeer ap2 or CB's
