AP3 Bag Setup Confusion

  1. Today @ 12:50pm#1 I just moved over to AP3 irons (4-PW + 48) with Project X LZ 6.0s in them. Love the irons, but now my gapping is all crazy. I was coming from png i25s (4-UW with CFS R shafts - too soft for me).

    Here's what I have in the bag now: Titleist 915D2 10.5* Titleist 915F 16.5* Titleist 915H 21* AP3 4-PW + 48* Cleveland CG10 54* and 58*

There are two obvious issues, The 21* hybrid and 4i are pretty close in distance and the 48* and 54* are too far apart. I am guessing that I am carrying the 48* about 125 and the 54 carries about 105. I also have a matching 50* that I could shove in there that should give me about 10 yards between clubs (could bend it a little weak too if need be). That means pulling something out on the top end. So the hybrid or the 4i?

Alternatively, I can bend the 54* to 53*, learn to hit 3/4 shots with my wedges, and then turn the 21* down to 18.5* or source a 19* head. I feel relatively confident with the 4i and the hybrid. Perhaps I should turn the hybrid down first and see if I still like it?

Right now, I'm leaning toward the extra wedge as I really like being able to just pull the right club for a full shot and go. Also worth mentioning that my home course is not long enough to need the 4i or hybrid anywhere unless something goes wrong. The par 5s are not reachable for me in two even with a good drive, the par 4s are not long enough to need a 4i/3h approach, and I can reach all the par 3s with the AP3 5i. There are two tight par 4s that I pull the hybrid or 3W for off the tee (depending on the day). Otherwise the long clubs generally stay in the bag.

Am I crazy for trying to carry 5 "wedges"? Thoughts?

Your 5 wedges would be pw, gw(48), 50, 54 and 58. Only you can determine, if that set up works well for you. You should give it a try and, see if it works for you. I remember there was a pro, that carried 2 wedges with similar lofts, but, because of the different construction, it gave him the gaps he wanted.

As for your 21* hybrid and 4 iron, you could swap them out depending on the course conditions.

    fwiw, my AP3 setup is 6-GW, 52 & 58 wedges, and, hybrids - 21 & 25 818H1's.
  3. If you have access to it check your ball speed on a launch monitor with you 5 iron, 4 iron and 21* hybrid, you should see an average of 5mph ball speed difference between clubs (if your hybrid is 125mph and your 4 iron is 120mph and your 5 iron is 120mph drop the 4 iron - whichever combo gives you the right gaps) as far as 5 wedges technically the pw is lofted to what 9 irons used to be lofted. I play the T100's 2* strong so i have 5 wedges - 44* T100 PW then vokeys at 48/52/56/60. I backload my set because i typically have 50-150yards for my 2nd shot on par 4's and can lighten the bag in the longer clubs, focus on your scoring clubs first unless distance is a higher priority which based on your yardages i would dial in your wedges 4-6* gap usually works, i do 4* increments to tighten my gaps, but it also gives me more options, i can hit the 48* a comfortable 125 or flight it low with a ton of spin from 70, a specific yardage doesnt always determine which club/type of shot i hit.

Went to AP3 irons in 4-P and 48 degree wedge (from AP2) about 6 weeks ago along with the TS2 Driver, 3 wood, and 5 wood. I added a SM6 54 and 60 degree wedge to the set. While they give me 6 degree gaps in the wedges, I’m OK with that because most of my wedge shots are with the 48 degree wedge since it is the same as the PW loft I grew up playing. If there’s a pin that requires a high lofted shot to get close to it, I’ll use the 54 or 60 degree.
  5. Thanks for the responses. I finally got a second round in with the set and have gone 21*, 5-GW, 50, 54, 58. I'm still dialing in distances to see what's going on. I feel like the GW and 50 are too close together.

I was thinking of picking up a Mevo or Voice Caddie to take to the range so I could get some relative distances at the top and low end of the bags.

I do like having the 50 in the bag around the green - I'm hesitant to chip with "set" wedges for one reason or another.
  6. And for what it's worth, I'm feeling WAY more confident with the AP3 long irons compared to my old i25s!!
  7. I play the 2009 ap2. Had for about a year. They were trade ins at my local golf shop and was to much of a great deal to pass up. After new grips and changing grip positions and slowing my backswing down, they work for me well enough. I'm looking to upgrade to a new set and let my set of ap2 fall to my daughter. She will not recieve my 913 f 3 wood and or my 913 21' . My 910 d3 she can have. I'm looking to upgrade and stay in the Titleist club market . I carry 14 handicap and I've just returned to golf about a year ago. I've been around and played golf since I was 8 or so. I've never had a professional lesson. I plan to play as much as possible from now on. At this time I play 3 rounds a week. Need clubs more suited for me and my game. Need assistance

I have 50,54,58 Vokey wedges for my AP3's and it works well. The only difference is I went with a 46 Vokey wedge and took out the AP3 48. The 3 degree difference between the PW and 46 gapped better than the 2 degrees between the 48 and 50.
