I've always been an excellent chipper around the greens using any iron (6-PW). I had my steel shafted irons sent to Titleist repair and re-shafted with graphite. I am now struggling a lot with chipping and being able to get up and down. I'm regretting going to graphite and am considering going back to steel. Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Probably more weight related impact than just steel versus graphite. You can get heavier weight graphite these days that will have the club feeling similar or just invest the time getting used to the different overall feel. Definitely a personal choice. Best wishes with a change back or time adjusting. I’m confident that if you were good before, you will be good again.

I use steel shafts in Vokey wedges, I prefer the feel as it feels more stable.

Were you fit for the graphite shafts you selected? Graphite in of itself can replace steel. There are pros using modern graphite shafts in all their clubs. Dropping the weight and shaft stiffness will result in a much different feel from most steel shafts. Did the graphite shafts improve your full swing shots with those irons?

This gets into part of the reasoning for split sets. If your old irons were not performing well in the 4-5-6 iron range, maybe they were the only ones that needed to be reshafted. Maybe a steel-fiber shaft or a heavier/stiffer graphite shaft would be a better option than the new shafts.

Even with more details us hackers can only speculate on what would be optimal. Best you find a fitter to do a comprehensive fitting to get your confidence with your pitches.

  4. For chips just off a green that is not elevated, I use a hybrid. For all other chips, I use a pitching wedge or my 52 degree wedge. As Dale pointed out, I see no difference between steel or graphite shaft given the same weight. Best of luck,

Late to reply. I also have steel and graphite on both sets of wedges. I also use all my irons for chipping. On steel, I have had the standard TrueTemper and then I also tried the XP90 then went to Modus wedge flex then tried the Recoil 90 graphite.

I can honestly say that the standard True Temper steel was probably the best of all. It was shorter in total distance, but it was terrific around the greens and 60 yards in.

XP90 was a bust for me- difficult to control on full shots and also very different (I don’t know how to describe it) around the greens… it’s like the weight balance is off.

Modus wedge flex was too heavy for me.

Recoil 90 is okay- great for full shots but not the best overall.

These changes came over time. Age and strength have something to do with it- I’m sure.

I’m building a new bag and I will be going back to standard steel shaft adjustment being on the loft.

    Hope this helps.
