Playing from a 7.0 hc I compared Titleist AP1 and AP2 at a shop, and although the sales guys told me the AP2 is made for my hc range, I hit the AP1 better.

Also the forged feel of the AP2 isn't as soft as like miz's ...... so there isn't a lot of difference in feel between the AP1 and AP2 .......... only when you want to feel a difference knowing that you have the AP2 in your hands ...... but else .....

Are there more low cappers using the AP1 instead of the advised AP2 ?

How about the Nippon shaft, I think I would prefer the Project-X 5.5 or KBS Tour Stiff .

  2. Gerald,

I felt the same way 2 years ago when the AP1 and AP2 came out.  I was used to playing a forged "near blade" club (tour pro combos), and found AP1 and AP2 both to feel flat compared to what I was used to. I ended up buying the Titlest Zblends with Proj X 5.5 "Flighted" shafts.  I absolutely love them.  My advice to you would be to try the new Titleist Cavity back Forged irons.  The feel will also make you a better player in my opinion because you will be able to tell where the ball is striking the clubface due to the better feel/feedback.  With your handicap you should be able to hit them well, and the feel is that buttery feel you have felt in the Mizunos.  I am a 5 HC and wouldnt trade these irons for anything else out there.  The Flighted Proj X's are engineered to hit the long irons higher and the short irons lower - you might think about that as well.  I love mine.  Go to the Project X website to check it out.   I saw the new Titlest CB's come out but I have no reason to switch based on the way I hit them.  Now if I could only putt....

I am a 8 HC and I just bought the AP1's a few months ago. I love them. I can work the ball when I need to with these clubs and I wouldn't trade them for anything. I think it is all about feel. Just because your game is good enough for the AP2's or CB's doesn't mean that they feel the best for you. Hit them all and then go with what works best for you.

OK last week it was indoors, yesterday I was given the opportunity to try the AP1 and AP2 side by side at the range and playing them for about 9 holes.

There is less difference between the two, but the comparison wasn't totally honest bc the AP2 had Dynamic Gold S300 shafts in them at 1" plus (which is near my specs) and the AP1 were +1/2" Nippon 105 Regular shafts in them.

I tried partial aswell as 3/4 and full shots ....... and on straight forward shots, both performed equally, but as soon as I started hitting curved balls (either way) it was easier with the AP2, maybe not in reallity, but the looks of the AP2 helped in shaping shots, just a little bit more ..... to be more precise, draws were about equal and fades went better with the AP2.

In distance the AP1 was a bit longer (no surprise with the stronger lofts) and a bad contact is rewarded more badly with the AP2, but I could tell what I did with the AP2 (more feedback).

Is shaping shots important ..... I would say it isn't, but when needed I prefer the AP2 .....

Last year I experimented with longer shafts (+ 1.5") in my longer irons ........ and wowwww that 0.5" extra can make such a difference ........

Shafts ...... I didn't like the Nippon ..... just too flexy for me ...... but on the other hand I didn't feel comfortable with the PX 5.5 or 6.0 ...... a bit too harsh...... they kind of feel dead to me ....... DG 300 S felt like a DG 200 S at plus 1.5" which looks to suit me best.

I am more a in between R and S guy, and I don't expect it to progress the stiffer way (I'm 52 yrs) ...... so my first thought would be going for a Regular flex, but with the help of my fitter and my pro we came to the conclusion that S300 + 1.5" would suit me fine.

Anyway I pulled the trigger (yet again) and ordered 3 - PW AP2 with S300 (+1.5") in standard lie......... now all I have to focus....... is getting to a low single hc !
