MB Irons dilemma

  1. Hello, I’m fairly new to golf but have been whacking a golf club on and off since I was a kid. I’m using a beautiful set of 710 MB’s to learn my swing and compress the ball in the bad yard, driving range and pitch and put, which I love but I neither have the confidence or ability to play a full game with blades so any suggestions on a Titleist set of irons for a newish player who has already started to find some compression with an MB Thank you

Success (as best one can describe with golf) involves dispersion pattern, distance, and launch/landing angle. MB irons are the least forgiving both for heal//toe strikes and how high/low on the face. Any club will be optimal compressing the ball correctly. That is not a feature of just MB.

The T350 is the most forgiving. Best you find a coach/instructor to check your mechanics and observe your ball striking. Based on how well you do (or don’t) finding the center of the face, that person can suggest a T series iron suitable to your current ability, if you aren’t getting optimal results with the MB’s. It is uncommon in beginning golfers, but still possible. More common in general is to start with T350/T200.
  3. Yes, you are absolutely correct in every aspect and I appreciate your time in replying to my post. As much as I love hitting MB’s and possibly the T100’s soon too my reality for playing the game properly lies with the snow shovel-sequel T350’s or a set of old AP1’s. Thank you.
  4. The mbs are meant for someone who is a very consistent ball striker who hits the sweet most of the time, which is not the case for inexperienced golfers. Everyone here will tell you to get fit. In the mean time you can purchase a used set of AP 1 irons for a good price. This would be a good place to start.
  5. Yeah, I went to look at the new T range today, which all look very neat and swish but the T350 look huge and like shovels in comparison to what I’ve been playing with in the past but will consider after a proper testing and fitting session. AP1 has been mentioned a few times as a solid forgiving club though. Thanks for your reply.

If it's any consolation for you, I've been a pretty good iron player for 30 years. My fitter has chased me down from the MB to the CB, now the T100's, I just moved from X to Stiff. I'm 59, still hit it very good, he just mentioned graphite in my irons. He's not wrong, I hit his and was smashing them. Find a good fitter (through word of mouth), and don't impulse buy. Good Luck!

And the journey continues... man, it's addictive.
First, you may want to establish your expectations for your game. Goals, time commitment, outcomes, etc. This may help you on this decision. As you've seen, MBs can be challenging but if you have time and put in the work, the reward of a consistently well struck shot can give great joy. If you'd like to practice and play occasionally with solid equipment that is ready for you now and if you want to put more into your game - there are options.

My suggestion, it sounds like you like a smaller head size vs something larger/more forgiving. New T150 & T200 (soon to be T250) are good options for distance & dispersion. In the used market, T100S or older AP2 models also fit those categories.
The other reason for a fitting is to find the best shaft for you. There are SOOOO many options and having an experienced fitter help you decide can be even more valuable than head choice.

Good luck and enjoy the journey!
  8. As a beginner, you need to find the right clubs that tailor to your game and swing. Its awesome that your starting to compress the MB's, however, maybe the MB's, even though they offer a lot of feel and workability, arent even the right style for you. My suggestion is to either go get fitted, or just go to your nearest golf shop and test out different head shapes. Although the blades are awesome to look down at, maybe a more bulky game improvement iron is what you need to lower scores and gain confidence.
