GT3 vs TSR

  1. I recently cracked the face of my beloved TSR3. Based on past experience moving on from 983K, 913, 917 TS3 and TSi heads, I figured moving on from TSR to GT3 would be logical and relatively simple. I have not found that to be the case. FWIW, I’m a scratch and a seasoned tournament player- I’d like to think that I know what I’m doing. While I admit that I built my swing around the TSR, I find that when I make the same swing that I know produces a hold off fade with the TSR, I tend to hit the GT3 straight and sometimes left. The differences are so stark for across the board performance that it seriously perplexes me. I find that to hit the GT3 effectively, I have to change my swing, something I really don’t want to do. Maybe over the winter, but not now. Of course, when I hit the cracked head, it does exactly what I expect it to. The GT3 definitely seems livelier and one would think has more modern technology, but I’m nowhere near as consistent with it and I find that the face towards the toe scoreline seems a touch more closed than the TSR. Visually not as appealing. I guess what I really want a head that plays similar to the TSR.

So two questions: (1) has anyone else experienced this? (2) is there something about the internal construction of the club that is different enough to cause this? Again, never a problem moving on from previous models, but a noticeable difference between these two.

Several reviews have noted that there is not much difference jumping from TSR to the GT. I have the TSR2 and after hitting the GT2 with the same shaft, I can't justify the update. Buying a new club, yes I would get the latest. But looking at getting an upgrade, it just doesn't work for me. Of course my opinion only applies to me, so I suggest everyone do their own research.

With all due respect, did you make the transition to the GT3 with a certified Titleist fitter? Many pros have transitioned from TSR to GT but under the guidance of a fitter who probably also changed their loft or model or shaft if they were experiencing a different ball flight. If you just changed heads with previous shaft and same loft, you might not have optimized your selection. Yes, the technology is very different from TSR to GT including how the face wraps around the sole and the crown built as a separate piece that wraps from heal to toe. I get that you are an accomplished player but even the best players go to qualified fitters. I have no doubt you can dialed into a GT3, GT2, or GT4 with a shaft and loft that will give you great results.

Shaping should be near identical between GT & TSR. Check your loft sleeve settings. Both clubs should have the same visual appearance at address. For your ball flight, GT weight port is towards the front of the face, TSR at the rear. Could effect your delivery of the club and closure rate. Get fit if you can. I went into GT2 this cycle and I have always been a 3 player.

I also tried to go from TSR3 to GT 3. While I thought the look of the GT3 was amazing and 9/10 people love the GT, I found the the TSR3 performed the way I wanted it to and stuck with that driver for this season.
