I've noticed that when my grip tightens (intentionally or not) in the down swing, more often than not, I will hook or draw the ball when I intended on a straight flight path. So, I held my 7 iron straight out in front of me with the face perfectly perpendicular with the ground. With my thumbs 1/4 inch back of the shaft centerline (in my case to the right) and my "Vs" pointed slightly between my chin and trail shoulder, I tightened my overlapping grip. The face closed! With my thumbs directly on center line, as hard as I squeezed, I could not close the face! This may be a cure for the unintended hook or draw. Has anyone tried this?

I've been thinking of playing with my grip pressure since reading an article about it recently. It basically said that many people are not gripping tight enough causing the clubhead to move while swinging. I'm going to consciously adjust my pressure next time I'm on the range and see what happens.

    William,
Great piece to add for our team and a problem I have myself with closing of the face. Having the right thumb left of centerline is something I think most golfers do because thats what is taught through lessons or videos people watch to get the “V” pointed at the right shoulder. Putting the thumb more towards center line will also slightly weaken the grip in both hands to ensure trail hand covers lead thumb.
I’m going to try this today and see what it does. Great advice and will follow up to let you know how it works out. Thank you!

Proper grip size is another very important factor.

Grip pressure is very important to tight or to loose is very important.

For me, I was always gripping the club too tight on the setup. Now I have relaxed my grip pressure on the setup and then let the pressure take care of itself on the backswing and downswing. It's improved my accuracy. Sam Snead you should grip the club like you are holding a little baby bird. I guess to each his own and whatever works to get the ball in play.
  7. I had to play around with grip a while ago, I had a tendency to struggle with closing the club face and let's just say I had a slightly overactive fade. To change grip pressure I changed my grip, I used to interlock but now just overlap and I've noticed that it allows me to get my lead hand to rotate back and bring the clubface back square.
