Translating non competitive scores to tournaments

  1. I have been taking golf seriously for about 4-5 years, and every time I go to play competitively I shoot my worst scores, how can I improve them?

    Play the course and not chase a score. Manage your shots on the course and do not play shots you are not comfortable with. Enjoy the rounds instead of chasing a trophy. I assume you are referring to playing in competitive events. We all have bad rounds in tournaments.
  3. How much higher are your scores than your typical rounds? Are the additional strokes coming from one particular area of your game (e.g., driver, bunker, chipping, etc.) that isn’t challenged by your home course? It may be as much the mental side — setting expectations too high, hanging on too poor shots for too long, not giving yourself grace, etc.

    I have the same problem. I get the jitters too often when playing in a tournament. Even when playing with my crew, someone always shouts out a dollar a hole, and I can 3 putt from 2 feet.

    It's easy, you don't have full control of your emotions when a score is on the line. That is another skill all together. That emotional control bleeds over to your golf swing when the pressure is on. Your swing gets short, quick, and it's easy to get out of sync.

    ***Golf is an emotional game. To compete, you have to learn to breathe, be patient and pick your spots. As an example, I'm a scratch golfer, pretty confident in my ability. In tournament play, I'm a legit 3-4 handicap.

    Now I just ask myself if I would rather be working or golfing...that usually helps

    Play the next shot, forget the last. All you can do is play the course and yourself. That is your only competition. Try to stay in the moment and focus only on what you can control.
  8. Need to change to gamer mindset. You miss putts, chunk a chip, hit irons short, hook than push a drive because you get tight and timid.

    Breath and tempo should be your only swing thoughts.

    Other mental thoughts be committed to your shot, have a quick and consistent pre shot routine. Think about course strategy. Chip and putt to make it not the I hope I don’t miss this 3 footer mentality.

    Committed swings to conservative targets.

    If you’re in jail bail out don’t try hero shots.

    Play the golf course and don’t press if you have a bad hole.

    Have fun and enjoy the competition.

    I played competitively since junior golf and I tend to score better in Tournaments than in casual rounds I think because I focus more on the things above. In casual rounds I tend to play a little loose and more aggressive and can make mistakes.
