As five of us friends gathered at the first tee, it was determined the game would be WOLF. We would tee off in a rotating turn, the first being the Wolf, who would choose one other golfer as his partner to hopefully beat the other three golfers on that hole. Yes, there was money on the line, but only small change. When we got to Hole Sixteen, a 125 yard par three resembling the Sixteenth at Augusta, Stan was the Wolf. As his shot missed the water, but landed in the trap, everyone knew he would be looking for a partner. I was up next. The wind was light, but in my face. I grabbed an 8 iron, placed a brand new gleaming white Titleist Tour Soft ball on a tee, and made my swing. Immediately, I sensed I had hit my ball perfectly. I looked up and saw it souring high against the blue sky, heading directly at the pin. “There’s your partner,” Tom said. “Wouldn’t it be nice if it just went in?” I said. The ball landed just short of the pin, rolled a few feet and found the bottom of the cup. Everyone cheered, then laughed as Stan exclaimed, “Partner!” Afterwards, with four of my good golfing friends, and me buying the drinks, we lifted a glass to my good fortune at our favorite Mexican restaurant watering hole.
