I was playing alongside my buddy, Vince Viola in the Annual Memorial Day Tournament held at The Abilene Country Club. It’s a two day tournament. The format is a two man match play event with 6 teams per flight. We were in our second match of the day playing the back nine holes during this match. Wind was right to left at 25-30mph. All three guys hit ahead of me and were all in the back left swell off of the green. I asked them all what yardage they played, the pin was set at 145 but was playing much longer. My question was 165 or 175…Vince said 170 and the other two just looked as if they have no clue, lol!! I told Vince I would just step on an 8 iron and see what happens. I hit the 8 iron as pure as I could hanging it way out to the right and let the wind bring it back in towards the hole. It lands about 6 feet right of the hole, takes one bounce, checks up and releases right into the hole. As it checks up and releases Vince starts yelling at the ball to get in the hole. I’m just staring in disbelief as the ball disappears into the hole. I just froze and couldn’t believe what had just happened. When I turned around I was almost tackled and picked up by Eddie Lackey, who played linebacker at Baylor several years ago. He held me and ran with me for about ten yards as we all started yelling like high school football players! There were two foursomes on our tee box as we were backed up during the tournament. There was also a group just left of the green on the 17 tee box. They all saw the ball roll in and they started yelling as well. The moment was very cool and memorable. It’s definitely the coolest moment I have had in sports. I’m glad I was able to share it with one of my closest friends and a group of guys that are all great individuals. I will remember that moment forever. I’m proud to be a part of the “Hole in One Club”!!
