what is my natural swing?

    is anyone out there not sure what their natural swing is? i do not know what mine is and would love to know what it is. i have  2 to 5 different swings on a course and even more for a range session.   it  helps when i have to bend a ball around a tree or fade one to avoid trouble but for the most normal shots it kills my game.  nobody who i play with very rarely notices but i know it and it drives me and my game crazy.  It  is what keeps me from being a 10 handicap versus a 5.   can someone please  help me identify what my natural swing is??

    There was an interesting article in Golf Digest about swing plane.  There is a test where you hold your upper right arm (for righties) against the side of your torso and attempt to touch your shoulder with a pointed finger with the elbow remaining tucked at your side.  If you can touch it just barely your swing plane is inbetween a fully rotational and an upright 2 plane swing.  If you can't touch your shoulder, then your backswing is pretty upright.  If you can touch behind your shoulder, then your swing is extremely horizontal.

    Obviously, if you have a 10 handicap, you have a basically sound swing.  You should have one swing motion you use for hitting it straight and then to draw or fade you grip the club closed or open (respectively) with face pointed toward target and swing along footpath; too many people try to incorporate too many motions such as an outside-in path to fade.  Ball position in relation to the torso is the same for all shots - lined up with shirt pocket and head slightly behind the ball; you move your feet around to play "back" or "forward"  and vary stance width according to club (driver apprears to be off front instep or wedges in middle of stance).  Pitching and chipping you swing along the target line vice footpath.  There are some great swing videos at Revolution Golf - Paul Wilson has some anti-slice videos and the staff also includes Jim McClean and Gary Player.   Also check out Don Trahan Sr (www.swingsurgeon.com).

    I did read it, but I get both Golf and Golf Digest.  It was an interesting spin that we all need to stop looking like DJ - "our" swing can work.  Your instructor need not be rigid in the angle of the rotation if it is all on plane and feels good to you.

    You nartual swing can also be what feels best for you once the basics work (no outside in, reverse pivot, or lack of latency).  Trying for more speed by extending my turn has never increased speed.  If it gets "too tight", then I can't keep my plane level.

    Lou- thanks for your reply...i am now reading Jim Hardy's book "The Plane Truth for Golfers" and have discovered i am a one -plane swinger... after one  long range session the ball flight and swings were different and both were better then all the different "swings" i was using before....i am only a little ways into the book but i am very thankful to this tip/reply from you b/c it lead me to the plane test you mentioned which led me to the book by Hardy. thanks again.

    Good question with hundreds of answers. The simple answer is going back, you need only rotate your shoulders perpendicular to your spine and the downswing must begin with the feet, legs and/or hips. Try that a bit and you will soon feel "Your Swing". Next, to go from a 10 to a 5, try working on your short game - 15 yard pitch shots, chips of various lengths and putting
