This large interloper was found on our course and removed. It wanted to play through, a member was not playing with it (thank god), and had not paid the visitor fee. Proshop was called and removed it from the course. A golf professional's job is most certainly a varied one!

In the last week five such interlopers have been removed. They are beginning to move to their hibernation dens near the river.

Are these poisonous? Damn you're brave for getting that close if it is poisonous.

You bet it is. A couple of years ago one of those bad boys was draped over the door of the men's room at the halfway house. Needless to say, I held it in a little while longer. The small black ones are ok. You see them all the time scooting across the cart paths.

I played the Diamondback Golf Course in Haynes City Florida (now closed). They had a huge stuffed rattler in the Pro Shop. They said not to look for balls off the fairway. "We're loaded with rattlers". Needless to say I hit every fairway except one. I saw the ball about 10 feet in the tall grass and left it for the snakes. Scary critters for sure.

It is actually a Prairie Rattlesnake. This female was about 3 feet long with 7 rattles on the tail. Our course use to have Bull Snakes which scare away the Rattlesnakes. The Bull snakes which are constrictors and not venomous have left and the rattlers have moved in the last couple of years. These snake provide an excellent incentive to hit the fairways and to stay out of the coulees.

Whoa! Incentive to hit more fairways or motivation to find another course?
