Headed up the coast this weekend to get Pasatiempo and Pacific Grove off the bucket list. Golfweek just published their "Best Courses You Can Play" list by state and they have Pasatiempo now listed second in CA behind Pebble Beach. Probably the best Alister MacKenzie course I will get to play being that Cypress Point, Augusta, and Royal Melbourne are impossible for me to expect to ever get to play. They say Tom Doak's restoration in 2007 brought it back to it's original glory. Looking forward to playing it and giving everyone my review when I get back.

Hi, I've been lucky enough to play Pasatiempo a few time this summer. An amazing course. So well thought out, and it's all you could hope for from Alister MacKenzie. Each hole will breed confidence off the tee and each approach shot will be a test to navigate the bunker complexes around the greens. Enjoy!

The architect Alister Mackenzie lived in a modest house along Pasatiempo Golf Club. Its location is marked by a statue in the backyard and a plaque along the sidewalk. Not sure which hole but the staff will surely know.

Mackenzie had a hand in Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland (Great track!), Crystal Downs and Royal Melbourne.

    Looking forward to your review.

Yep Jerry, his house was on Hole #6. Should be a fun day, no matter how I end up playing.

The No Laying Up boys produced a great video of their trip to that wonderful course. Beautiful design. Looking forward to your review...

Looking forward to your review of such an amazing golf course which is also in my bucket list.

Dale, I am a true believer than nothing is impossible. As the world is changing, more private golf clubs will eventually switch to a semi-private mode and thus setting aside certain tee times for public play. When this happens, we will be able to play most golf courses in our bucket list.

Until this happens, I will keep playing Augusta, Royal Melbourne and Cypress Point in my dreams.

Have a great time at Pasatiempo Dale! It's a great track and I'm lucky to live only 35 minutes away. His home boarders the 6th fairway. We have two other MacKenzie tracks in our area Sharp Park in Pacifica and North Wood in Monte Rio a nine hole course between the redwoods.

Enjoy! Got to play there last year, as well as TPC Harding Park, when I was in SF for a work trip. Pasatiempo is an amazing track, the 1st hole has amazing view of the ocean, and it only gets better from there. Give yourself a little extra time as you have to take a shuttle to the driving range, and back to the clubhouse/1st tee.

Really enjoyed Pasatiempo. As usual, pictures do not do it justice. I have more posted on the TT Community Facebook page. Lots of golfers so it played a bit slow but I guess that is to be expected. I would recommend anyone playing course in the San Fran or Monterey areas add this one to your list. Pretty hilly so glad I had my new Players 4 Carbon with me. There are carts available but I prefer walking these historical courses.

Thank you for your review Dale. Pasatiempo looks amazing and it seems that the weather could not have been better. You are a much better photographer than me. Thank you for your posts and keeping the forums alive.

Looked like a beautiful day out there Dale. I didn’t know it’s 2nd best in california and there’s a lot of really nice courses here in the state. THe course isn’t that long from the tips is it either? How was Pacific Grove?

Of course, Golfweek's ranking are subjective so everyone would probably rank their favorites a bit differently. I wanted to play it from a golf historical perspective. Course yardage is misleading as there are a few short par 4's that make the overall yardage low but there were a few really long par 4's and 200+ yard par 3. Elevation changes also made some holes play long. If you need a getaway from the 110+ degree summer days of Palm Springs, weather was nice and cool up there. I also really enjoyed Pacific Grove. Can't beat the price and although it is not as pristine as the other Monterey courses, it is a fun little track. I kind of liked the two nines being totally different.

It would be nice to play somewhere that’s not going to ruin the hat i’m wearing at the course, lol, but hopefully the extreme temps are almost over, so only 100 degrees which is doable for about another month and then we’re good. But then the prices start skyrocketing.

Nice pics. The last one looks like it has a very, very deep bunker on the right. It definitely has my name written all over it. HA!

Yep, hole 16 and I managed to get in it, and surprisingly got out and on the green. Happy with my 2-putt bogey from there. My bunker play has been worse than bad the last couple of years so miracles do happen.

Nice pictures Dale and the weather looks great. It is a fun and challenging course and I'm glad that you were able to cross it off your bucket list. I also don't mind PG either with it's two different nines.

I've played 40-50 rounds over the years. I prefer it to any but Pebble in that coastal area public access.
