Is it better to loft up or loft down

  1. I am looking to adjust the loft on my SM10 wedges to better fit gaps and gain some yards. I have 54 degree F14 and 58 D12. I plan to order new wedges and M wondering if it is better to order a 54 and loft it down or a 52 and loft it up.

I have a fairly steep angle of attack and generally my course is pretty soft.

    Thanks in advance

Might go for a proper fitting and talk to a certified fitter. Whatever you do it will affect the bounce on the club, as well.

    Here is how that works:

Increasing the loft (making the clubface angle more horizontal) will increase the bounce angle by the same amount in degrees.

Decreasing the loft (making the clubface angle more vertical) will decrease the bounce angle by the same amount in degrees.

    For example:

If you weaken a 48-degree wedge to 49 degrees (increase loft by 1 degree), the bounce will also increase by 1 degree.

If you strengthen a 50/8 (50 degrees loft, 8 degrees bounce) wedge to 49 degrees (decrease loft by 1 degree), the bounce will become 7 degrees (decrease by 1 degree).

This relationship between loft and bounce is important to consider because the bounce angle affects how the club interacts with the turf and sand, influencing the ease of getting out of different lies and playing various shots.

  4. I would say you're more on the safe side if you use 52 Loft. If your place is soft, you can work more easily and also cover all distances. In my experience, it is rather problematic to swing faster with less loft because then the constancy collapses.

Sounds like you are after 54 and a 58 degree wedge, shy not just order the loft you need? This will maintain the designed bounce of the wedge. In any case if you decrease the loft of a wedge (ie 54 bent to a 52) the bounce will decrease. The bounce will increase if you increase the loft of a wedge (ie bend a 52 to 54). For soft conditions and steep attack angle more bounce is generally preferred, so maybe choose to increase the loft?

54-14F bent to 52* swings better vs 52-12F.
