Wedge shots from rough and bunker usually break down at contact.
DJ Pie and Neil from @NoLayingUp join Parker McLachlin (aka @ShortGameChef ) in the test kitchen to get his advice on how they can take their wedge game from one star to five.
One of the primary areas they address is working through the patterns that show up when wedge play gets inconsistent - especially from imperfect lies.
It comes back to setup and motion. Ball position, face angle and path all influence trajectory before the club even moves. From the rough, that means understanding when to move the ball slightly forward for height or bring it back to flight lower. It also means changing how the club moves through the grass. More up, down, then through. If the swing stays too shallow and spends too long in the turf, the strike gets inconsistent and the ball comes out flat.
Bunker play is a different motion altogether. Weight stays more forward, the legs stay quieter and the club needs to enter and exit the sand quickly. Ball position should not drift back in the stance, and the face often needs to be more open than players think. Setup controls more than most golfers realize. Face angle, ball position and path shape the shot early. If wedge play has been inconsistent, this is usually where to start.
