PGA TOUR | Arnold Palmer Invitational
Three weeks after claiming his first PGA TOUR title at the WM Phoenix Open, Scottie Scheffler won again Sunday at a windswept Bay Hill, closing in even-par 72 for a one-shot victory.
- Scheffler – playing a Pro V1 golf ball – finished first in Strokes Gained: Approach (+8.062) amid treacherous scoring conditions, while leading the field in average proximity to the hole from the fairway (23 feet) in Round 4.
- With the win, Scheffler moved to No. 5 in the World Ranking.
SCHEFFLER ON HIS PRO V1
- Scheffler made the switch to the 2021 Pro V1 golf ball at the beginning of last season in Kapalua, moving from his prior generation Pro V1 model.
- Said Scheffler: “I found the new (2021 Pro V1) to be a little bit faster and a little bit softer cover. I was nipping it a little more around the greens, and then I picked up a couple miles per hour with the driver, so it was a good change. The aerodynamics were also better. The ball was more stable in the wind, but I could still put the amount of curve that I needed to put on the golf ball. A lot of times when the wind’s blowing really hard, you’ve got to really hold the ball against the wind as well. So you still need to be able to put some curve on that golf ball and control it with it also being stable in the wind. And I found that the new ball was a little bit better and a little bit more stable.”
WINNER 2-FOR-3 WITH NEW SCOTTY CAMERON PUTTER
- The winner of the Arnold Palmer Invitational is now 2-for-3 since switching to his new Scotty Cameron Newport 2-style putter.
- The API champ first put the new Special Select Timeless Tourtype GSS tour prototype in play three weeks ago at the WM Phoenix Open, where he claimed his maiden PGA TOUR victory while leading the field in putts per green in regulation (1.66) and ranking second for the week in Strokes Gained: Putting (+6.49).
- His success on the greens continued this week in Orlando, where he gained 4.255 strokes putting (17th) on the field and was fourth in putts per green in regulation (1.636).
- The now two-time PGA TOUR winner added the new putter to his bag following a December trip to the Scotty Cameron Putter Studio, where he worked with Scotty Cameron Tour Rep Brad Cloke.
- He had previously been using a Newport-style Super Rat 1 tour prototype. (Newport is the softer, rounder counterpart to the Newport 2.)
- “He just wanted to switch things up a little bit and give himself a slightly different look heading into 2022,” Cloke said. “Prior to visiting us in the Studio, he’d been messing around with an older Newport 2 Timeless he had at home. He’d added bunch of lead tape to the sole to try and get it to a similar swingweight as his Super Rat. He really liked the profile but the feel wasn’t exactly where he wanted it, so we went to work on building him a new setup with adjustable weighting.”
- He played his first two events of the season with the Newport 2 Timeless tour prototype as he waited for his new Special Select Timeless Tourtype GSS – with a finished length of 36 ¼ inches, and two 25g adjustable weights in the sole – to be ready.
- The new putter arrived at his doorstep the week before the WM Phoenix Open.
TSi DRIVERS ARE TOP CHOICE AT BAY HILL & PUERTO RICO
- Titleist continues to be the most played driver on the PGA TOUR, with a total of 79 players (33%) at the Arnold Palmer Invitational (35) and Puerto Rico Open (34) teeing up a Titleist driver.
- Of those 79 drivers, all of them were either TSi2, TSi3 or TSi4 models.
- TSi3 is the TOUR’s most popular driver model, with 51 (21%) in play this week across the two events.
LPGA | HSBC Women’s World Championship
Making her first start of 2022, World No. 1 Jin Young Ko birdied five of her final six holes Sunday to claim a two-shot victory – the sixth win in her last 10 starts on the LPGA.
- Playing a Pro V1 golf ball, Ko set two records with Sunday’s closing 6-under 66 – her 15th-consecutive round in the 60s and 30th-consecutive round under par.
- For the week, she hit 89% (50 of 56) of fairways and 83% (60 of 72) of her greens in regulation, setting her up for a total of 22 birdies.
- In her previous victory – at the CME Group Tour Championship to close out 2021 ¬– Ko hit 91% (51 of 56) of fairways and 93% (67 of 72) greens in regulation.
- She has made birdie or better on 29.2% of her holes played in her last 10 starts, while hitting 121 of her last 133 GIR’s (91.1%).
THIRD WIN OF 2022 FOR TSi DRIVERS OF LPGA
- The winner of the HSBC Women’s World Championship played a Titleist TSi3 driver, marking the third win for TSi driver models in just four events played so far this season on the LPGA.
- The HSBC Women’s champ played a Titleist TSi3 11.0° model, the same one she gamed for each of her previous five victories (the first one coming last July at the Volunteers of America Classic).
- She first put her Titleist TSi3 11.0° model into play at the KIA Classic in late March, making a mid-tournament switch from a competitive model.
- Following the first round, she made the short drive from Aviara GC in Carlsbad, Calif., to the Titleist Performance Institute in nearby Oceanside to test the new TSi models.
- It took no more than 30 minutes for her to get dialed in to a TSi3 11.0° driver with a Graphite Design IZ 5R shaft (45”), while working with Titleist fitters Aaron Luttrell and Nick Geyer.
- The new setup, which she gamed for Round 2, delivered added ball speed with a more optimal spin number for increased carry distance.
- Over the final three rounds that week, she averaged 264 yards off the tee, 12 yards longer than her Round 1 average.
- Danielle Kang, who won the LPGA’s 2022 season opener (Hilton Grand Vacations LPGA Tournament of Champions), as well the winner of the following week’s Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio, also played TSi3 drivers (both TSi3 9.0° models).
- Said Kang on her TSi3 driver: “This Titleist driver, I absolutely love it. I used to play a competitor for a long time, but when I first hit this TSi3, I never felt better compression on the face, on the ball. My misses narrowed down. The dispersion of the driver was more compact, so I loved that feel. And driver’s really important because I really value being in the fairway so that I can utilize the irons. So I really like to be able to attack pins. I’m an aggressive player, and where I position myself off the tee is really important.”
CHAMPION WINS AGAIN WITH PHANTOM X 5.5
- The winner of the CME Group Tour Championship claimed her fifth LPGA title and eighth top-6 finish in eight starts since putting a Scotty Cameron Phantom X 5.5 putter in play.
- She switched to the Phantom X 5.5 from a competitive mallet model following a fitting session with Scotty Cameron fitter Eric Kong in Korea, where she took an extended break after a T-9 finish at the Olympics.
- She debuted her new Phantom X 5.5 – inspired by the putter Justin Thomas has used for 13 of his 14 PGA TOUR wins – several weeks later at the Cambria Portland Classic, where she needed only 78 putts over 54 holes (1.44 average) on her way to a four-shot win.
- “I changed this putter five or six weeks ago in Korea, and I use this putter four weeks in a row from the Portland and here,” she said after her victory at Cognizant Founders Cup. “I got two wins with this putter and two top-10s, so, yeah, I think I will love this putter (smiling).”
DP WORLD TOUR | Magical Kenya Open
Ashun Wu (Pro V1) played the weekend in 11 under (65-66) on his way to a four-shot victory in Kenya.
- It was the fourth DP World Tour title for Wu, the most successful Chinese player in the Tour’s history, who started the final round four shots back of the leader.
- Said Wu: “It’s a very good feeling today to win this championship. It was very tough today, I played very well today and made seven birdies. After two rounds I told myself, if I can make 5 under every day on the weekend and finish 15 under (he finished one better, at 16 under), I think I’ll have a chance to win the tournament.”
ASIAN TOUR | International Series Thailand
Titleist Brand Ambassador Sihwan Kim captured his first Asian Tour title, closing in 9-under 64 for a two-shot victory in Thailand.
- Kim, 33, started the final round three shots behind the leader but quickly made up the difference with seven birdies in a row from holes 2 through 8 to make the turn in 29.
- The 2004 U.S. Junior Am champ opened the event with a course-record 62 at Black Mountain GC in Hua Hin.
