Unforgettable Hole in One

Unforgettable Hole in One

3 members of my golf crew and I routinely play our coastal town's short, yet challenging, city course, Indian Hills Golf Course ("The Hills"). The Hills, which is located in Fort Pierce, Florida, is a fair test for golfers of all skill levels. Kori, Mark, Jon and I have each played the course hundreds of times. Unfortunately, prior to August 6, despite all the birdies and occasional eagles, none of us have scored an ace at the Hills, or elsewhere. This morning's round set up for a record scoring day: Kori eagled the par-5 2nd, I birdied the par-4 5th, and Jon and Mark were hovering around even. As we approached the par-3 8th, the front right pin position appeared harmless. It was not protected by any lake or bunker, and my high draw was on point that morning. I shot the pin at 140 yards, which is a stock PW (Titleist 714 CB, 1 degree flat), took two practice swings, and swung what will be one of the most unforgettable swings of my life. The ball flew high in the air, drew on the descent, landed 1 foot on the fringe at 137 yards, took a fortunate leftward bounce, and trickled into the hole 4 yards away. All four of us played well at the Hills, and after the round, we celebrated the ace at the Square Grouper, Fort Pierce's signature waterfront bar, located at the Fort Pierce Jetty. I've never tasted a sweeter Tom Collins cocktail. Moments like these are why we play the game. Best, Matt Frias
