Tips from The Tour: Webb Simpson's Chipping Strategy

We’ve all been there. Just a few paces off the green and looking to chip it close so we can salvage a par. And while it sounds easy, we know all of the questions that start to run through our collective minds as we step up to the ball…

What shot should I play? What club do I pull? What is the right strategy to get the ball up and in?

Well, we checked in with the 2012 U.S. Open Champion and Titleist Brand Ambassador Webb Simpson for a little advice.

"What I see a lot of amateurs do wrong is they pull out a 60° wedge and they try to loft it, but we're not going to do that," Simpson explains. "The goal is to get the ball on the ground as quick and as short as possible, and let it roll out like a putt."

    Amazing how talented players make the difficult seem easy, thanks for the tip and the confidence to play it.

    Love the visual perspective that shows the delofted club and just how far back the ball is "placed" in the stance. I'm assuming this technique works best with at least a 7 Iron.


    I think the ball I fielded tested was the new velocity. When the word explosive  is used to describe the ball, they are not kidding. Can not wait for winter to be over so I can this ball.

    I agree with Webb Simpson to use a club to get it rolling on the green like a putt.

    Usually I use my 52 degree A wedge, but today I am going to work with my PW to get that feel working to roll it more. Webb explained his pitching approach very simply so I understand what I have to do to roll my pitches better. Thanks, Webb
