Just inquiring what would you do if you could change 3 rules....

    Mine would be:.

       1.  If you hit out of bounds, go to last point of entry, hit from there, add a 2 stroke penalty.  This will speed up play and keep  playing in a timely manner.  If in a tournament or match normal rule would apply.

      2.  If in a bunker/sand trap, and if you've taken 3 hacks, pick up ball, drop ball at last point of entry outside the sand trap and drop, play on all strokes count.  Again, speeding up play.  Normal rules apply in a tournament or match.

      3.  Finally, on the caddies cannot stand behind player when addressing the ball.

I'm not sure about three, but the number one rule I would change is stroke and distance on OB and to a lesser extent, lost balls.  I understand why it's stroke and distance, but there's nothing worse than waiting on the tee to hit only to see a guy heading back to the tee because he lost his ball.  I feel like OB should be treated like a water hazard.

I give a big "Amen" to that!  When I hit a ball out of bounds and discover it I really can't go back to the tee.  There is another group standing there.  It slows down the game big time.  So give me a two stroke penalty and Let me go from  where the ball went out of bounds.

    I would...

    1. allow another player to stand on another players line to see the read of the putt.

    2. Fix spike marks

    3. Treat being in a divot as ground under repair

I don't mind the OB stroke and distance rule though

One club length when ball lands in a divot in fairway.

John, you're dead on with #3..  Nothing worse than hitting a fantastic drive only to find your ball in a divot...  Couldn't agree more...

John - standing on someone else's is evil as it's very distracting to the other player. I know people that swing back and release the club if you do that to them.

    As for rule changes:

1.The OB penalty should be changed to the penalty and relief applied to lateral water hazards. It would speed up the game, especially for beginners. You'd still have the stroke and distance option.

    2. Allow for a provisional ball to played if you think it might be in the water hazard. Many times when playing over water, you can't see the ball land until you get up to the area. It would speed up play if you were allowed to play a provisional ball.

    3. Allow players to tamp down spike marks but not use a tool other than the putter - why should you be penalized for the sloppiness and lack of consideration of those before you? Add, you must do so without delay.

    3. Divots - kind of the same thing as #2. However, golf isn't perfect and we should learn to strike the ball from all sorts of lies. I'm torn between my desire to play from a clean lie and the intent of the founding fathers.

I like the idea that you can 1) fix a spike mark and 2) get a free drop from a divot in the fairway.  What is worse than having a spike mark directly in your line or hitting the fairway and finishing in a divot?  Both of these seem unusually penal, but I am guessing that people may abuse the rules if they were different.

As far as hitting a ball out of bounds, it should almost never cause a delay because you should always hit a provisional shot if there is any doubt.

To me, the rules are what they are.  Just like any other game we play within the confines of the rules as do all of the other players.  As long as we are all following the same rules, everybody is ultimately impacted the same so no changes are really necessary.

The rules are the rules are the rules.  Casual golf among friends, I see no problem with most of these suggestions. But for me I would never use a caddie in an informal setting. Tournament golf (the only type of golf in which every single rule is enforced 100% of the time) I feel there should be no changes.  Only thing that bugs me is if a player is penalized because a high magnification video camera witness his ball move 1 micrometer.

  11. I agree with number three, also stop letting the players put markings on the ball, i get tired of seeing professional mark the ball and line the ball for a tap in, this would speed up play also.

    My thoughts.....

OB should be treated like water hazards, take your drop where it crossed the line and add the stroke

Treat divots as ground under repair

    Bunkers....

When you end up in someones footprint, you should be able to lift the ball, repair the area of the footprint and replace the ball (why should we have to pay for someone else's lack of etiquette).

When a bunker has standing water in it and all the sand is soaked there should be some sort of relief (why should we pay the price for the lack of maintenance being performed by the course).

Mark, we user the OB rule as you said as an oprion to the rule for leauge play  and I like it a lot. Re Tee one stroke or drop were ot went out for two stroke penilty. But for Tournament play I think it should be as is.

I would like to see divots in fairway only treated as ground under repair. And lost ball treated like a water hazzard. Also in wet conditions lift clean and place always if fairway only.

I would like to see the 14 club rule changed to unlimited. I like 16 myself and have to leave 2 at home, depends on what course I will be playing.

Sorry, #2 would be be anchoring ban for putters. While I don't use one I think it's dumb. Who cares how you putt. Just my 2 cents.
